Bone Grafting
Bone grafting rebuilds bone where it has thinned, often after a tooth has been missing for some time. It is done when there is not enough bone to hold an implant.
Whether you need it, and how much, is decided after an examination and imaging of the area.
- Bone graftGraft material fills the space where bone is missing. Shown here filling a tooth socket; other grafts are placed differently.
- Existing boneThe graft is placed against your own bone.
Building a base for an implant
Sometimes the graft is placed at the same visit as the implant; sometimes it needs time to heal first. Which applies depends on how much bone is missing, and we explain the order in your plan.

Questions patients ask
Why does bone thin after a tooth is lost?
Without a root in it, the bone in that area tends to shrink over time.
Does everyone need bone grafting before an implant?
No. Many people have enough bone; the examination and imaging show whether you do.
