Gum & Periodontal Care
Periodontal care looks after the gums and supporting tissues that help keep your teeth stable. It finds and treats gum disease, from early inflammation that makes gums bleed to infection that affects the bone around the teeth.
It starts with a periodontal examination. With a thin instrument, the dentist gently measures the small space between each tooth and its gum; when that space has deepened into a periodontal pocket, it can be a sign of gum disease. X-rays show the level of the bone that supports the teeth. Together they show how healthy the gums and bone are, so treatment matches what is actually there.
What to look out for
Gums that bleed when you brush, swelling, bad breath that does not go away and teeth that feel loose are signs to mention at your visit, or sooner if they are new.

Questions patients ask
Can gum disease be treated without surgery?
In many cases treatment starts with a deep cleaning below the gum line. What you need depends on how deep the spaces between your teeth and gums measure at your examination, and on the X-rays.
